POMONA >> After two days of deliberation, a jury found an Alhambra man guilty of second-degree murder in a 2014 traffic collision in Claremont, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced Friday.
Ryan Munoz, 39, was driving his truck west on the 210 Freeway near the Towne Avenue offramp early June 28, 2014, when he crashed into a car, according to a news release. Munoz had been speeding.
The driver of the car survived but the passenger, Gevork Krpikyan, 27, died. News reports at the time said the victim’s vehicle rolled, and Krpikyan, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected.
“Munoz remained about a half-mile near the incident and then fled 15 minutes after the crash,” the news release states.
During the trial, it was revealed that Munoz’s blood alcohol content was at least .20 percent at the time of the crash, more than twice the legal limit. In addition, testimony established that Munoz was on summary probation for a 2012 DUI conviction.
Munoz faces 15 years to life in state prison. He is scheduled to be sentenced Nov. 18.
Munoz originally pleaded not guilty to one count of murder and one count of leaving the scene of an accident.
