FONTANA >> After deliberating five hours, a San Bernardino Superior Court jury earlier this week cleared a Fontana police officer charged with negligence in the deaths of a man and his mother-in-law in a 2012 traffic collision, the city’s legal representatives announced Thursday.

The family of Jose Landaverde alleged that Fontana police Cpl. Jason Coillot violated department policy by speeding without emergency lights or sirens when he broadsided a car driven by Landaverde, killing him and his mother-in-law, according to a news release by Lynberg & Watkins law firm. The family sought $20 million in damages.

Coillot claimed that he was “driving at emergency speeds on surface streets while using his overhead emergency lights” when Landaverde failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection of Juniper and Ceres avenues and failed to yield to the officer. Coillot said he was unable to avoid the collision.
