POMONA >> An Ontario man was apprehended Monday, suspected of striking and killing a man in a wheelchair late Sunday night.
Authorities say Alejandro Ambriz, 40, was driving a 2004 Saab he borrowed from his employer, an Ontario used-car dealership, when he struck the man in the 900 block of West Holt Avenue just after 11 p.m. Police allege Ambriz immediately fled the scene.
Detectives said they received an anonymous tip leading them to Ambriz, who was reportedly driving without a valid driver’s license, according to a police news release.
The pedestrian, later identified as Charles Atterbury — a 49-year-old homeless man who authorities said lost a leg when he was hit by a vehicle about two years ago — died at the scene.
Holt Avenue was shut down for nearly six hours.
According to investigators, the Saab’s front license plate was knocked off in the collision. Atterbury was found lying on the sidewalk, officials said.
Police said Ambriz called a friend to pick him up, and they took the car to an auto body repair shop in Montclair, where it was being stored.
Ambriz was booked into the Pomona City Jail, where he is being held for suspicion of felony hit-and-run and vehicular manslaughter.
Anyone with information about the incident can call the Pomona Police Department Traffic Services Bureau at 909-620-2081.
