Mike Trout shaken after his ‘scary’ car accident

SEATTLE >> Mike Trout emerged from his car accident shaken but seemingly unharmed.

“I’m just very fortunate,” Trout said Friday. “It could have been a lot more serious. It’s a scary thing for sure.”

Trout’s Mercedes struck another vehicle on the 55 freeway around 9 p.m. on Wednesday, sending a 27-year-old woman to the hospital with what the California Highway Patrol report described as “major” injuries. Typically, that means the injuries are not life-threatening.

No update on the woman’s condition was available as of Friday evening.

Asked Friday about the incident, Trout said he couldn’t talk about details of the case, including the other driver, until the investigation of the accident is completed. The findings of the official investigation will affect how the insurance companies handle the situation.

Trout is expected to reach out to the other driver once the investigation is concluded.

Trout said he had gone to dinner with some teammates following Wednesday’s home game, which ended about 6:30. He said he was on his way home when he had the accident.

According to the CHP report, Trout swerved to avoid other cars when traffic was stopped because of another accident, and that’s when his car hit the left rear side of a Chevrolet Sonic.

Trout, who said it was his first car accident, said he was worried that he might not feel good the next morning.

“A lot of things go through your head,” he said. ”It’s a scary situation. I thought I would wake up and be sore. With the impact, I thought it was a possibility, but when I woke up I was fine.”

The same can’t be said for his car, which had to be towed from the scene. The front right side was most badly damaged.

“The car isn’t in good shape,” Trout said.

Promotion for Meyer

Alex Meyer’s next appearance might be in the major leagues, allowing the Angels to get the best look at the player they targeted in the Hector Santiago trade.

Meyer pitched four scoreless innings, striking out six and walking none at Triple-A Salt Lake on Thursday night.

Angels general manager Billy Eppler said “it’s in consideration” to have Meyer come to the big leagues next. The Triple-A season ends Monday, and Meyer’s next turn would be Tuesday, so there is no more opportunity for him to pitch there.

The Angels are likely to go with a six-man rotation in September, and Meyer could be a part of that.

Comeback continues

Andrew Bailey, the 2009 AL Rookie of the Year, was among the three players the Angels added for their first game of September.

Bailey has been unable to rediscover the form that made him a successful closer with the Oakland A’s from 2009-11. He missed nearly two years after shoulder surgery and has had a variety of injuries since then.

The Angels also recalled lefty Cody Ege, who they claimed on waivers from Miami, and catcher Juan Graterol.
