LOMA LINDA >> The San Bernardino County Coroner’s Department has identified a cyclist killed Friday by an alleged hit-and-run driver as 62-year-old Redlands resident Randolph Stephenson.
Stephenson was riding his bike west on Barton Road, east of Campus Street, about 11:45 a.m. Friday when he was struck by a minivan that failed to stop for a traffic stop. He was taken to Loma Linda University Medical Center, where he died at 12:18 p.m., according to a coroner’s press release.
About 45 minutes prior to the fatal collision, detectives with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department had arrived at a nearby home, in the 11000 block of Benton Court to arrest Eric Tofoya, 37, of Rancho Cucamonga, on suspicion of domestic violence. Tofoya was observed leaving the residence, where his relatives reportedly live, and the detectives tried pulling him over, but Tofoya allegedly failed to stop and fled in his vehicle, according to a sheriff’s press release.
Tofoya struck Stephenson east of Campus Street then crashed into a van. He exited his vehicle and fled on foot.
Tofoya was found hiding in a nearby shed, arrested and booked into the Central Detention Center in San Bernardino on suspicion of domestic violence and murder. He is being held without bail.
