SAN BERNARDINO >> A motorcyclist is recovering after he slammed his motorcycle into a big rig’s trailer, shutting down a San Bernardino intersection for several hours Tuesday morning.
Base Line Street was shut down from California Street to Pepper Avenue following the crash.
The blue motorcycle, which had the word “Rialto” emblazoned on the tailpipe, became wedged under the rear tires of the trailer as the driver was making a left turn from Lassen Street onto Base Line, said a San Bernardino police officer at the scene. The impact caused the rear brakes of the tractor trailer to lock up, making it difficult to move, police said.
Initial findings show the rider was traveling west on Base Line, officials said.
The crash was first reported just after 4:30 a.m., and the roadway remained closed as of 7 a.m.
The area where the crash took place is mostly industrial, but Base Line is a heavily traveled road. Several drivers had to be rerouted around the crash scene.
The motorcyclist sustained minor to moderate injuries and is expected to survive.
Speed may have been a factor, according to crash investigators, but that is yet to be determined. San Bernardino police are investigating the crash.
