More officers, more checkpoints to stop Memorial Day weekend DUI

LOS ANGELES — Authorities today warned that they will be out in force during this weekend’s Memorial Day festivities, targeting drunken and drugged Southland drivers.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department plans to have checkpoints in West Hollywood and Paramount, along with an amplified presence in Lancaster; while the California Highway Patrol “is deploying all available officers” to patrol freeways and roads countywide.

Authorities advised residents to take the usual precautions to avoid life-threatening situations behind the wheel, including:

• Making advance plans to secure transportation, such as taxis or programs including Uber, Lyft or Curb, for people intending to drink

• Limiting party guests to one or two drinks spaced over several hours, while making sure plenty of food is availabl

• Calling 911 to report dangerous drivers on the road
