LA PUENTE >> Deputies believe a 63-year-old driver suffered a fatal heart attack Tuesday before his pickup rear-ended a truck.
His 6-year-old and 3-year-old daughters were injured as a result of the collision.
Sgt. Mark Stonich of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Industry Station said the older girl sat in the front passenger seat while the 3-year-old was in the back. They were not in car seats.
He identified the driver as Jose Ortiz of Pomona.
The crash took place on Valley Boulevard, just west of Ferrero Lane at 3:32 p.m. Tuesday.
Stonich said Ortiz was driving a white pickup truck westbound. In front of him was a truck moving about 10 mph.
“It looks as though he (Ortiz) had a heart attack before, which caused the collision,” Stonich said.
He said paramedics took Ortiz to Queen of the Valley Hospital in West Covina, where the Pomona resident died. The two girls were transported to Los Angeles County USC Medical Center.
He said the 6-year-old girl suffered abdominal injuries and remained Wednesday in the hospital’s pediatric intensive care unit.
The younger girl had a bump on the head and a swollen lip, according to Stonich. She was released later to her mother.
