Hearing continued for woman accused in 60 Freeway wrong-way DUI crash

LOS ANGELES >> The woman accused in a deadly wrong-way DUI crash on the 60 Freeway is trying to suppress her blood test, but her hearing was pushed back to April 15.

Olivia Carolee Culbreath, 23, of Fontana is accused of killing six people in the early hours of Feb. 9, 2014 in Diamond Bar. Prosecutors allege she was driving east in the westbound lanes at 100 mph and drunk.

The judge handling the case was in trial Friday, and the matter was continued, said Sarah Ardalani, spokeswoman for the District Attorney’s office.

In October, lawyers for Culbreath filed a motion at the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center in downtown Los Angeles seeking to kick out the blood test, alleging California Highway Patrol officers did not have a search warrant to obtain the blood sample.

Culbreath’s lawyers argue she was unconscious at the time the blood sample was drawn and was not able to authorize law enforcement and medical personnel to take the sample.

The collision occurred around 4:45 a.m. on Feb. 9, 2014, the CHP said. Culbreath allegedly crashed head-on into a sport utility vehicle, and another vehicle subsequently crashed into the SUV, killing six people.

During a preliminary hearing in January 2015, CHP investigators testified that witnesses saw Culbreath drinking at a Fullerton bar hours prior to the crash occurring.

Of the six people who died in the incident, two were in Culbreath’s car. One was Culbreath’s sister, Maya, 24, of Rialto, and the other was Kristin Melissa Young, 21, of Chino.

The other four fatalities, occupants of the SUV, were from Four Huntington Park — Gregorio Mejia-Martinez, 47; Leticia Ibarra, 42; Jessica Jasmine Mejia, 20; and Ester Delgado, 80.
