FONTANA >> A Hawthorne man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence following a fatal crash with a bicyclist early Wednesday morning, Fontana officials said.
Just after midnight, Felipe Martin, 29, was driving a gray 1999 Honda Accord east on Foothill Boulevard near Sultana Avenue when he drove south of the white line on the edge of the road, striking a man on a bicycle traveling in the same direction, police officials said.
The rider was tossed onto the hood and windshield of the Honda, and when the vehicle struck a light pole, the man was launched about 40 feet onto the pavement, according to a news release. The bicyclist died at the scene.
Investigators determined Martin had been driving under the influence of alcohol, officials said, and he was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving and vehicular manslaughter.
The bicyclist’s identity is not known at this time. He is a Latino between 40 to 50 years of age who was riding a red bicycle. Anyone with information on the identity of the bicyclist, is asked to contact the Fontana Police Department at 909-350-7700.
