Bicyclist killed in late night Fontana crash, Hawthorne man arrested

FONTANA >> A Hawthorne man is behind bars after a violent crash claimed the life of bicyclist early Wednesday morning, police said in a news release.

Police say Felipe Martin, 29, was driving a 1999 Honda Accord east on Foothill Blvd. shortly after midnight when he allegedly crossed into the bike lane, striking a cyclist who landed on the car hood and windshield.

That’s when police say Martin struck a light pole, catapulting the cyclist about 40 feet.

The cyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.

Martin was arrested and booked into West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga on suspicion of drunken driving and vehicular manslaughter. He’s being held in lieu of $100,000 bail.

The bicyclist’s identity is not known at this time, according to the release. He is described as Hispanic 40 to 50 years old and was riding a red bicycle.
