Smart Car driver who died Sunday on 57 Freeway identified

SAN DIMAS >> Authorities released Monday the name of a man killed in a single-vehicle crash on a 57 Freeway off-ramp in San Dimas while driving a Smart Car.

He was 22-year-old Ryan Mendenhall of Mira Loma, said coroner’s Lt. Larry Dietz.

The crash was reported at 3:50 p.m. Sunday on the southbound side of the freeway near the Covina Boulevard off-ramp, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Alex Rubio.

The victim, identified as Mendenhall, was pronounced dead at the scene, he said.

According to an online CHP incident log, the Smart Car may have collided with a wheel that came loose from another vehicle.
