ONTARIO >> A 37-year-old parolee accused of fatally shooting a man as he drove with his two young children was found Thursday hiding in an Ontario chicken coop, Ontario police officials announced Friday.
Javier Alejandro Frias of Ontario was arrested on suspicion of murder after officers found him Thursday evening in the backyard of a home in the 300 block of Phillips Street, according to a police statement and the San Bernardino County sheriff’s booking log.
Frias allegedly shot and killed 40-year-old Angel Antonio Hernandez of Ontario on Tuesday as the man drove near Vineyard Avenue and G Street with his two small children in the back seat of his car, officials said. The children, ages 1 and 4, were not hurt. Investigators confirmed Frias and Hernandez knew each other.
Working on leads, investigators and the Ontario Police Department Multi Enforcement Team were searching for Frias when they were tipped off that a man was hiding in a chicken coop, police said.
Officers determined the man in the coop was Frias and ordered the parolee to come out. When he refused, police said a K9 was brought in to apprehend Frias.
Police allegedly found Frias was armed with a loaded handgun, according to the statement. It was not immediately clear if the gun was the same weapon used in the killing.
A motive for the fatal shooting was not released.
Frias was taken to a hospital for injuries sustained during the K-9 apprehension and later released.
He was booked into West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga and is being held without bail.
The shooting is still under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Mike Chavez at 909-395-2925.
