San Bernardino County police to watch for DUI drivers during New Year’s Eve celebrations

Last Updated on January 12, 2023 by CCAR Staff

As people celebrated the end of 2015, officers and deputies were out in force.

Departments throughout the Inland Empire and throughout the country, are staffing DUI checkpoints over the three-day weekend for many, to ensure safety on the roadways.

“Drunk driving is one of the deadliest crimes we face as a nation,” California Highway Patrol Commissioner Joe Farrow said Thursday, in a written statement. “Make sure the plans for your New Year’s celebrations include a safe way to get home for you and your passengers.”

“If you are caught driving under the influence, you will be arrested,” Farrow said.

Redlands police will hold a checkpoint at an undisclosed location within the city limits from 9 p.m. Saturday until 2 a.m. Sunday.

DUI saturation patrols will also be conducted in Rialto, Chino, Fontana, Redlands, Rancho Cucamonga, Victorville, Apple Valley and Hesperia.

Since Dec. 18, officers countywide have arrested 139 people on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, according to an Ontario Police Department news release.

During the 2014-2015 New Year’s holiday, CHP officers made more than 1,100 arrests statewide.

But for those who want to celebrate and get home safely, there are options available.

AAA’s “Holiday Safe Ride Program,” offers free safe rides home during the holidays for members and nonmembers.

Then there’s Uber. Uber is not a free service, and prices vary. The Uber app can be easily downloaded through smartphone app stores for both Android and Apple systems.
