RANCHO CUCAMONGA >> A Riverside motorist was injured and his passenger died after the car they were in crashed into a tree.
The crash occurred shortly after 11:30 a.m. Saturday on Haven Avenue, south of Foothill Boulevard, according to a news release from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.
As of Tuesday morning, the San Bernardino County coroner had not released the name of the passenger who died, pending notification of next of kin.
A 2006 Chevrolet Aveo driven by J.B. Taylor, 58, of Riverside was heading north on Haven Avenue, through the intersection of Civic Center Drive, according to the release. For an unknown reason, the passenger-side tires of the Chevrolet struck the curb twice before the driver lost control and struck a tree.
The car rolled and collided into a blue 2000 Toyota SUV, which was stopped in the No. 4 lane of northbound Haven Avenue.
The Chevrolet’s passenger side was severely damaged and the passenger died. Taylor was taken to a hospital with major injuries, according to the release.
The driver of the Toyota, Rosemary Barrera, 36, of Rancho Cucamonga, and her passengers were not injured.
The cause of the crash is under investigation.
