Deputy recovering from motorcycle-car collision in Rancho Cucamonga

RANCHO CUCAMONGA >> A sheriff’s deputy was recovering at his home Thursday after driving his motorcycle into the back of a vehicle and injuring himself, authorities said.

The deputy was riding south on Milliken Avenue and about to turn left onto Fourth Street at about 6 p.m. Wednesday when he hit the car in front of him, Jodi Miller, a Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman, said in an email.

An ambulance took the deputy, who suffered minor injuries, to a hospital, Miller said.

“The deputy was treated and released and is recovering at home,” Miller said Thursday. “It is not known right now when he will be returning to work.”

The driver in the car he hit was not injured, and the vehicle sustained minor damage, according to Miller. No traffic citations were issued, she said.

More than a dozen law enforcement vehicles from the Sheriff’s Department, California Highway Patrol and the Ontario Police Department responded to the scene.

Motorists heading south on Milliken were diverted a couple of blocks north of the Fourth Street intersection.

A tow truck arrived about 6:20 p.m. A plump man in a motorcycle T-shirt drove the injured deputy’s motorcycle onto the elevated ramp of the tow truck.

“I’m going to drive it up there,” he said to the tow truck driver. “As soon as I get up there, raise the bed. OK?”

After, the salty-haired man put on a motorcycle helmet, mounted a Harley Davidson that was parked in the Fourth Street crosswalk and drove west, followed by another man on a Harley.

Milliken was opened to traffic a short time later.

This report has been updated to correct the spelling of Milliken Avenue and reflect the injured deputy’s latest condition.
